2nd INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION "SIMONE DELBERT-FEVRIER" FRANCE COTE D'AZUR - 2nd - 6th November, 2008 This competition aims to enable young pianists from 5 to 26 years and at all levels to compete before a jury of high competence, and perpetuate the memory of the great piano teacher, Mrs Simone DELBERT - FEVRIER, who was entrusted with a piano class at the CNR (Regional National Conservatory) of Nice until 1976 and whose heritage includes worldwide renowned pianists and a large number of professors and personalities from the world of music among the most renowned. 5 CATEGORIES PROVIDED: Category 1: Solo Piano "Young Talents" - Program semi-imposed. Category 2: Solo Piano "Concert Diploma" - Program semi-imposed. Category 3: "Grand Prix" - Program semi-imposed (Finale with Orchestra). Category 4: "4-hand" Piano. Category 5: "jazz" Piano. RULES OF THE COMPETITION: The competition consists of the following 5 categories: Category 1: "Young Talents", Category 2: "Concert Diploma", Category 3: "Grand Prix", Category 4: "4-hand" Piano, Category 5: "Jazz" Piano 1) The competition is open to pianists of all nationalities and all levels with respect to the following age limits: Candidates born after November 2, 2002: Initiation degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 2001: Beginner 1 degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 2000: Beginner 2 degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 1999: Preparatory 1 degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 1998: Preparatory 2 degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 1997: Elementary 1 degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 1996: Elementary 2 degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 1995: Medium 1 degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 1994: Medium 2 degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 1992: Higher degree or degrees following Candidates born after November 2, 1990: Virtuosity degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 1988: Excellence degree or upper degrees Candidates born after November 2, 1986: Graduate degree in concert or upper degree Candidates born after November 2, 1982: Grand Prix 2) The Organising Committee reserves the right to limit the number of applications in order not to exceed the planning capacity of the tests. The selection will be made in the chronological order of applications received. The Organising Committee would like to thank in advance the applicants for their understanding (see how to register). 3) For categories 1 and 2 classical piano tests, all works are to be performed without repeat and from memory, at the tempo advocated by the author and indicated in the edition stipulated by the Organising Committee, where required. Applicants from other categories can compete with their own score(s). 4) Competition venues: The competition will take place in the following locations: - "Salle Culturelle polyvalente" - St Martin du Var (France), - "Auditorium of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art" - Promenade des Arts, Nice (France), - "Auditorium du Conservatoire National de Région" - Nice (France). 5) Application deadlines: October 6, 2008 (included), postmark as proof. 6) Any application to the competition implies acceptance of the competition rules and payment of application fees. Absence of the candidate on the day and time of the notification to attend, sent no later than 30 days before the event, leads to exclusion from the tests without being able to claim reimbursement of fees. In case of non-receipt of the summons, please immediately notify the secretariat of the competition. 7) The inscriptions requested by e-mail are permanently registered only after receipt of payment of registration fees (see how to register). Payment of fees is a signing. 8) The inscriptions requested by postal mail are permanently registered after receipt of payment of fees and require 2 stamped envelopes to be enclosed with the application (see how to register). The payment of tuition fees is a signing. 9) The fees are payable to: PIANO AD LIBITUM (see how to appply). The fees are the following: Classical Piano, Category 1 ("Young talents") and Category 2 ("Concert diploma"): Introduction to Beginner 2: 35 € Preparatory 1 and 2: 40 € Elementary 1 and 2: 45 € Medium 1 and 2: 50 € Higher: 60 € Virtuosity: 70 € Excellence: 80 € Concert Diploma: 100 € Category "Grand Prix": 120 € Category "4-hand": same as for category 1 and 2 - 20% discount for participants. Category "Jazz Piano": same as for category 1 and 2 + 20% surcharge due to extra costs involved by the organization of the tests for this discipline. 10) The registration fee shall be forfeited by the Organising Committee, except in case of cancellation of the competition or a test of the competition, or refusal of an application by the competition Organising Committee. 11) 20% discount are made for applications received before 1st of July 2008 at the headquarters of PIANO AD LIBITUM , postmark as proof (See how to register). Registration requested after 1 July 2008 included, do not benefit from the reduction (see "how to register"). 12) For the jazz piano trio test, the candidate who wishes to be accompanied by his/her own musicians and at his/her own expense for the performance, travel and stay, shall inform the Organising Committee of the competition when registering. 13) Should the number of applications in a category be insufficient, the test for the latter category would be cancelled and registration fees would be refunded to the candidate. 14) Applicants shall notify the secretariat of the competition in case of of absence. 15) Applicants are reminded that the use of photocopy for music sheets is prohibited by law. 16) The draw for the order of passage of the candidates will appoint an alphabet letter. 17) The Board's decisions are final. 18) In a tie as in the case of a dispute, the voice of the president of the jury counts twice. 19) A member of the Jury whom student is a candidate shall withdraw his/her vote for this student and give them in to either the president or another member of the jury. Upon the decision of the jury members, the missing vote or points to the candidate can also be calculated using the average of the votes of members of the jury deciding. 20) The jury reserves the right to suspend the candidate running and not to award any reward and special award for a degree, including in the "Concert Diploma" and "Grand Prix", if they judge the level of candidates inadequate. 21) In case of wrong work performed, the candidate will be listened to but not rewarded. He/she will be exempt from tuition fees in the next edition of the competition. 22) The development of the tests is public and entry of the competition is free for candidates and their escorts. 23) The Organising Committee of the competition reserves the right to decide unilaterally that a screen masks candidates who will then perform under a call number drawn. 24) Are considered "Winners", the candidates nominated 1st for each level. Are considered "Nominees" or "Honored" candidates appointed 2nd and 3rd for each level and obtaining "first", "second" or "third" honours. 25) Upon rating of the jury, awards related to the candidates performance is defined in the following manner: from 12.5 out of 20, "third" honours; from 15 out of 20, "second" honours; from 17.5 out of 20, "first" honours. 26) Are referred to as "prize winners" all candidates rewarded with prizes and diplomas. 27) Certificates of attendance may be issued to applicants upon request. 28) "Special prizes" may be in addition to a reward already allocated, but are not reserved to the best candidate of a level. 29) In cases where the jury could not decide between 2 or more candidates, money prizes would be shared between the candidates. 30) Results, diplomas and awards winners will be announced and presented at the Closing Concert Competition. Candidates nominated by the jury are obliged to participate in this concert, this participation being a condition for receiving their reward. 31) Prize winners must collect their award personally, otherwise the latter will serve to fund the competition. 32) During the tests and during the concert of winners, Organising Committee may decide to photograph, record and film the performance of candidates without generating any remuneration for the candidates. Candidates allow Organising Committee of the competition to retain and use these photos and recordings for the purposes of public promotion of the competition. 33) Candidates who obtain an award may not present themselves again in the International Piano "Simone Delbert Fevrier" in the same level. Candidates who obtained the "Concert Diploma" at the International Piano Competition "Simone Delbert Fevrier" will not compete in the competition the following year in this level and may only apply for the "GRAND PRIX". 34) Travel, catering and accommodation expenses are borne by the candidates. 35) For serious reasons and in cases of absolute necessity Organising Committee reserve the right to change the venue and the date of the competition. The fees would be refunded to those candidates who can not postpone the date of their stay for the competition. 36) In case tests in normal conditions proved impossible, therefore forcing the Organising Committee to cancel the competition, only application fees would be refunded to the candidates. It is recommended that far-off candidates opt for an insurance option for cancellation of airline tickets, train or other mode of travel, as well as for reservations for their stay. 37) In case of a dispute, only the French version of this regulation will be considered. REGISTRATION PROCEDURES ("How to register"). 1. As stipulated in the Rules of the Competition, the Organising Committee reserves the right to limit the number of applications in order not to exceed the planning capacity of the tests. In this case, applications for registration will be selected in the chronological order of their receipt and applications not selected will be returned and fees refund by cheque to the candidates. 2. The cheques and payments on rejected applications will be returned to candidates. 3. Registration fees are payable to PIANO AD LIBITUM before the closing date for entries, set to October 6, 2008. For reasons of limiting the number of candidates specified above, it is strongly advised to send the payment attached to the application. Initiation, 6 years old: a piece freely selected by the candidate (3 minutes maximum). Beginner 1, 7 years old: a piece freely selected by the candidate (3 minutes maximum). Beginner 2, 8 years old: a minuet from the small book of Anna Magdaléna Bach and a piece freely selected by the candidate (3 minutes maximum for 2 pieces). Preparatory 1, 9 years old: a small prelude from the 12 small preludes by JS Bach and a piece freely chosen by the candidate (4 minutes maximum for 2 pieces). Preparatory 2, 10 years old: a small prelude from the 12 small preludes by JS Bach, and a piece chosen in Volume 2 of "De Bach à nos jours", Lemoine publishing - see details in the book - (4 minutes maximum for 2 pieces). Medium 2, 14 years old: a prelude without the fugue from JS Bach "Das Wohltemperiert Klavier", a rapid sonata movement by Mozart or Beethoven, a work by a composer of the twentieth century or disappeared in the XX century (8 minutes maximum for 3 pieces) Higher, 16 years old: a 3 or 4 voice prelude and fugue from JS Bach "Das Wohltemperiert Klavier", a rapid sonata movement by Mozart or Beethoven, a romantic work and/or a prelude by C. Debussy, a work by a composer from the twentieth century or disappeared in the twentieth Century (20 minutes maximum for 4 or 5 pieces). Virtuosity, 18 years old: a study from F. Chopin or F. Liszt, an entire sonata by Mozart or Beethoven, a romantic work, a major piece by C. Debussy other than the "Preludes" or a major piece by M. Ravel, a work by a composer of the twentieth century or disappeared in the twentieth century (30 minutes maximum for 5 pieces). Excellence, 20 years old: a study by F. Liszt, A. Scriabin or S. Prokofieff, a great classical sonata in full length, a great romantic work, a work by an Impressionist composer, three works by composers of different nationalities, amongst which one French, belonging to the twentieth century or disappeared in the twentieth century (40 minutes maximum for 7 pieces). Concert Diploma, 22 years old: a 4 or 5 voice prelude and fugue by JS Bach "Das Wohltemperiert Klavier". The rest of the program is the free choice from the candidate, providing that a balance of technical virtuosity and romantic sensitivity on the one hand and a mix of nationalities and composers from different times to the present day on the other hand, be demonstrated. Contemporary works are allowed to the conditions they have been edited, that the candidate inform the assistance sufficiently in advance of the selected work and their publisher, and provides at least 2 copies of these works to members of the jury. The program duration shall be between 50 minutes minimum to 60 minutes maximum. Grand Prix, 26 years old : - 1st and 2nd solo piano tests: Completely free program providing a balance of technical virtuosity and romantic sensitivity on the one hand and a mix of nationalities and composers from different times to the present day on the other hand, be demonstrated. Contemporary works are allowed to the conditions they have been edited, that the candidate inform the assistance sufficiently in advance of the selected work and their publisher, and provides at least 2 copies of these work to members of the jury . The total duration of the first two tests of the program shall be between 50 minutes minimum to 60 minutes maximum. In the case where no such orchestra be available, the test with orchestra would be accompanied by a second piano. For applications to the "Grand Prix" category, it is required that candidates in this category be known as soon as possible for organizational reasons explained hereafter. Free accomodation: Free accommodation is possible with host families where a piano is available. These families, members of the association, welcome the candidates applying to the Competition, as well as trainees enrolled in the sessions held during school holiday periods. The list and contacts are provided on request. The selection of the host family is studied based on the date, duration of accommodation and level of the candidate. Given the relatively small number of these accommodations, it is advised candidates to book as soon as possible. Candidates interested in this application for free lodging are required to inform the Organising Committee as soon as possible, for reasons related to the internal organisation of the competition and more specifically due to the limited number of free accommodation, as well as with regards to the participation of the orchestra accompanying the candidates to the "GRAND PRIX". Any such candidates can apply immediately to reserve the accommodation and organise rehearsals with the orchestra or 2nd piano, and confirm and pay tuition fees not before the deadline of October 6. Indeed, this accommodation booking and this application is not irreversible as long as registration fees are not paid. They are also indispensable for the Organising Committee of the competition so that it can estimate the potential number of candidates and plan the duration of the tests.
